On Wednesday, September 30 the Board of the Redland Football Club ratified and advised the AFL of the club’s decision not to apply for a license in the proposed VFL/East Coast Competition for 2021.
The decision was based upon a number of factors surrounding the License criteria, however with the withdrawal of AFL funding, the uncertainty around travel costs in the model presented, and the standalone ex NEAFL club list profile modelling, the club felt it would be financially irresponsible and competitively disadvantaged to go to the next stage in the application process.
This decision has been relayed to our coaching and playing group and understandably they are disappointed considering all they have been through this year. Our loyal volunteers and support staff will also no doubt be impacted by this decision.
Redland Football Club Coach Phil Carse said “We will support all of our players through this decision as it will affect them all in different ways.
The Redland Football club and its players and staff have been proud of our ability to challenge ourselves, play at the highest level available and provide a pathway for aspiring footballers.
But as difficult as this process has been, with every decision comes a silver lining, and we look forward to the new challenge of becoming a strong presence in Queensland football moving forward”
The Redland Football Club would like to acknowledge and thank the AFL, the Victoria Point Sharks Sporting Club, our loyal sponsors and members who have contributed so generously along our journey through second-tier football. Your support has enabled our club to fly the flag for the Redlands Coast and helped forge opportunities for aspirational players, coaches, and administrators.
Redland Football Club President Col Tobiasen said “2020 has been a tough year across the board but this decision now allows us to shift our focus and reintegrate back to community football in 2021”
The club has held informal discussions with AFL Queensland and internal stakeholders around the application process for a QAFL license in 2021. We will keep everyone informed and updated as these talks and discussions progress.
